Flounder fishing at Texas City Dike in Texas City, Texas

This past weekend my son and I went to the Texas City Dike to try to get in on the start of the annual October flounder run. We had previously tried a couple of weeks before with no success but went for it again. The alarm went off early as we loaded up and headed toward Texas City Dike with one goal in mind: catch a flounder during the annual fall run. We stopped at Boyd's to grab live mullet before making our way to the water, hoping the conditions would line up for a productive day.

Once we arrived, we rigged up live bait and artificial Gulp baits and began working the pilings and structure where flounder are known to hide. The action was slow from the start. We managed a few bites and even caught a small croaker, but the flounder we were looking for never showed up.

Throughout the day we switched tactics, changed rigs, and moved around trying to locate fish. Between casts we shared fishing stories, including the legend of "Charlie the Flounder," a fish that got away years ago and has become part of our family fishing lore. I recently picked up some of the Salty Head jigs and tandem rigs. So far I am liking the build quality of the Doormat Slayer, too bad I lost one on my last cast of the day as I got hung up on the rocks.

Although the fishing didn't go as planned, the trip reminded us that success isn't always measured by what's in the cooler. Spending time together on the water, exploring new places, and enjoying the outdoors made the trip worthwhile.

To cap off the day, we headed to Darlene's Shrimp Shack in Galveston where we enjoyed fresh shrimp and reflected on the adventure. No flounder were caught, but the memories made the trip a success. I really loved being out there on the water spending time with my son.
