Ranch to Reef Grand Opening & Corpus Christi Fishing

Daniel Lopez

Eduardo and I started our trip with a breakfast stop in Victoria before continuing south toward Corpus Christi. We were headed to the grand opening of Ranch to Reef, where we planned to check out the shop, meet some fellow anglers, grab some new fishing gear, and eventually hit the water.

Once we arrived, it didn't take long for us to start spending money. We checked out new lures made by our friend Gabriel Flores Jr of Texas Made Lures, reels, rigs, and gear for everything from sheepshead and black drum to bull reds and tarpon. We even jumped on a fishing simulator before leaving.

Later that evening, Eduardo and I headed to Red Dot Pier. The wind was stronger than we expected, but we rigged up with live shrimp, popping corks, and some of our new gear.

Between casts, we talked about music, freshwater versus saltwater fishing, and the $92 fishing net we somehow convinced ourselves to buy earlier that day.

Unfortunately, the fishing wasn't great for us. Some of the guys around us found a few fish, including speckled trout, but Eduardo and I couldn't get much going.

We weren't too worried, though. Red Dot was just the beginning. The next morning, we were meeting David from Blue Sky Kayak and Rito from Coastal Republic to try kayak fishing in Corpus Christi.
