Saltwater Struggles & Freshwater Fails

Daniel Lopez

Some fishing trips just don’t go the way you planned — and honestly, this one was a disaster from the start. My brother Junior and I headed out to Seabrook and Bayside Park hoping to get on some fish, but the water was insanely low from the north winds and nothing seemed to be working.

To make things worse, Junior decided he wanted to learn how to use a baitcaster that day. Big mistake. Within minutes he had backlash after backlash and was completely over it. The entire trip turned into us arguing about fishing spots, tangled lines, rocks at the Texas City Dike, and who picked the worst place to fish.

Even though we didn’t catch anything, it was still fun being out there with family. That’s the thing about fishing — sometimes the memories are better than the catches.

Later, I skipped work and tried freshwater fishing for only my second time ever. I hit up John Paul Landing Park with worms, crankbaits, and absolutely no clue what I was doing. No fish there either. Eventually my friend Carlo joined me at another pond, where we talked fishing, life, and how different freshwater fishing is compared to saltwater.

To top it all off, I locked my keys in the trunk at the end of the day. No fish. No luck. But somehow, still a good time.
