Brandywine Falls
A few locals that I met in Whistler British Columbia mentioned that I should take a short drive to the Brandywine Falls Provincial Park to see the waterfall. I decided to take them up on their advice and stop in for a hike. Ample parking for cars and there’s even a section for tour buses to park. I don’t want to imagine how busy this place must bee in the peak of tourist season. There are a few restrooms available so it’s a good idea to go before the hike as there are no facilities along the way to the falls. The park has a few picnic tables near the parking lot which make for a great rest area with the family. Crossing a cool footbridge over the river running below. The hiking path is more like a walking path. Very easy...
Burlington Campground
Sleep with Giants! I stumbled across the Burlington Campground that sits within the Humboldt Redwoods on the Avenue of Giants and decided to stop in. I wasn’t planning to stop and camp so soon on my travels today but after pulling into this campground I just knew I had to stay the night. The drive through is way too cool… This park is mainly second growth redwoods so they’re not as large as some of the ones you might know of but these are still BIG. There’s a few old growth redwoods throughout the park and even one that was destroyed in a fire that sat behind my campervan. After making a couple of laps around I decided on Site 24. It had a nice open area and had the best views of the spots that were available. I’ll call this home...
Elkmont Campground
I camped at Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the very first day they were open for the 2016 season. I drove around the campground a couple of times and settled upon Camp Site B10 which I felt was the best one available as it was backed up right next to the river. I mean look at this view. Who wouldn’t want to spend a weekend or even a week with this view. Fire ring, picnic table and level tent pad were provided. This being a National Park there are no water or electric hookups for camp sites so you’re on your own in that regard. There are a few things I tell people when they’re starting out in photography. I explain that sometimes you need to think outside the box for a change. For instance, most...
Stillwater Cove Regional Park
As I was headed north from San Francisco along Highway 1, I spotted a campground sign ahead so I decided to pull in and call it day. It was Stillwater Cove Regional Park which I hadn’t heard of so I thought I’d give it a try anyways. One thing I’ve noticed on my trek through California is the high prices county and state parks charge for camping. Well Stillwater Cove Regional Park was no different. Their camping fee for the night was $32. Ouch. Oh and they even charged an additional $2 per dog, per night. Yes. You read that correctly. They charge extra for dogs! Not really wanting to trek further north I went ahead and paid my $32 for the night and set up camp for the night in Site #10. The camp sites weren’t too bad although I...
Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree
Drive thru tree! Hwy 1 and Hwy 101 in Northern California are filled with cool roadside attractions dating way back. The Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree which sits within a privately owned grove of Redwoods dates back to 1937. Admittance into the park is $5 for a vehicle. The lady in the booth at the gate was quick to tell me my Vanagon was too tall to drive through the tree. I figured as much well before I got here but I wanted to go in and look at it anyways. She then gladly took my $5 and I was on my way. There was one vehicle in front of me going through the tree and taking photos so I sat and waited for my turn. Once the other vehicle was done I proceeded to drive to the opening NOT through it. I knew I wouldn’t fit but I wanted a...
