Matagorda Pier Fishing

We fish the Matagorda Pier at the Jetty Park in Matagorda, Texas with @mmontelongo and @sumerian81 on the hunt for reds and speckled trout. The weather’s beautiful but crazy windy, and after being gone nearly a month traveling through six countries with my wife and son, I’m just itching to fish again. Honestly, my number one goal is to catch more fish than Eduardo.

We start out using salted shrimp, trying different casts around the pilings and out of the waves. We get plenty of bites, mostly small stuff—piggy perch, croaker, and sand trout—but it feels good just setting hooks again. I cut up the smaller fish for bait and joke around with Eduardo, keeping our usual friendly competition alive. Even when the action slows, we’re laughing, talking gear, and sharing ideas like camping near the pier or fishing new places together.

Later, we move across the road near the Colorado and then under the bridge to escape the wind and current. I switch rigs, trim hooks to avoid getting hung up, and keep experimenting. We don’t land anything huge, but that’s not really the point.

For me, it’s about being back, fishing with friends, and making memories. Some days aren’t about big catches—they’re just about being out there together.
